Underwater Hockey

A game anyone can play - just look at the Grizzlies

Underwater Hockey is a game played by two teams in a pool and you've guessed it, most of the action goes on under the water. Teams can have up to 6 players in the pool at anyone time and can have a substitution bench of an additional 4 players. In Hobart we play across the Olympic pool which is probably 20 odd metres and allows us to run three games concurrently.

In the water teams are distinguished by the colour of their hats and their sticks, one team has white sticks and hats and the other blue hats and black sticks. While you may not notice the hats much the sticks are the main give away hence the Refs checking of sticks before the game to make sure they're the right colour with enough paint and that they're not too sharp.

The game starts with the puck in the middle of the pool and the two teams on opposite sides of the pool with the six players in the water and subs on the pool deck. The refs starts the game by sounding something and signaling the start by dropping his raised hand onto the water. After that it's on. Dash for the puck, flick and chase, look for support, get to the surface for a breath and then get down amongst it again.
